For: Immediate Release Date: March 21, 2006 Contact: Dan Barnes March 21, 2006—Torrance, California USA – StopTech Balanced Brake Upgrade®-equipped cars finished first, second and fourth in the 2006 SPEED World Challenge Touring Car season opener at Sebring on Friday, March 17. Turner MotorsportBill Auberlen, 2004 Touring Car Champion, led from flag to flag in his #2 Turner Motorsports BMW 325i, setting fast lap by 0.549 sec (2:20.562, a new lap record) and winning the race by 0.829 seconds. "All of the good racing was behind me,” said Auberlen. “After the jumble in the first lap it was clear sailing. If there had been a full course caution to bunch us up the results might have been different. But I have to praise the Turner Motorsport crew and H&R and StopTech because my BMW was really sweet. I can't wait to get back behind the wheel at St. Petersburg in two weeks." This is Auberlen's third win at Sebring in the last four years and the eleventh win of his Touring Car career. He finished second in last year's race (his lowest finish ever in a Sebring Touring Car race). Tri-Point EngineeringAuberlen was followed across the line by Randy Pobst in second, driving the #73 Tri-Point Engineering Mazda6, and Jeff Altenburg, who systematically drove the #72 Mazda6 to fourth place from a ninth-place start. Dino Crescentini put the #74 Tri-Point Mazda6 on the grid just two spots behind Altenburg, but a mistake in turn 17 cost several positions. In spite of driving a clean race thereafter, he was forced to settle for a finish in 20th position. The Sunoco Hard Charger Award was earned by Hugh Stewart in his StopTech-equipped #22 Speedtechnik/Dodge SRT-4, who finished 15th from a starting position of 31st after struggling during qualifying. Said Pobst, “The car had a very good balance this weekend, which I think bodes well for the rest of the season. Really, with how strong our drive was this weekend it almost feels like I won, and I was happy that I was able to qualify well and get a strong start. The Tri-Point team has worked hard with me to develop a setup for the car that is quick and consistent throughout the race, and I also feel that the StopTech brakes on the car were an important part of our race performance today.” Both Turner Motorsport and Tri-Point Engineering race with StopTech four-wheel systems, using ST-40 four-piston calipers in front and ST-22 two-piston calipers in the rear. LG Motorsports, Grand TouringIn SPEED World Challenge Grand Touring, Lou Gigliotti, driving the #28 LG Pro Long-Tube Headers Chevrolet Corvette, entered the first turn of the race in second from a fourth-place grid position, and took over the lead at the end of the third lap. Lou set fast race lap by 0.210 seconds (2:10.460) and led 13 of 20 total race laps, opening a gap of more than two seconds to Mike McCann’s #82 McCann Plastics/K&N Filters Dodge Viper. When heavy smoke from the engine on lap 16 brought out a black flag for the #28 Corvette, McCann drove his Viper conservatively for three more laps, finally leading 2005 Champion Andy Pilgrim, in his #1 Cadillac CTS-V, across the line with a victory margin of 11.571 seconds. The LG Pro Long-Tube Headers team has grown to a three-car effort this year after two poles and two wins in 2005 with a single car. Rookie Doug Peterson finished sixth in the #87 Corvette, and Claudio Burtin brought home the #26 car to an 11th-place finish. All three LG Pro Long-Tube Headers Corvettes use StopTech ST-60 six-piston calipers in front and ST-40 four-piston calipers in the rear.
