September 8, 2006—Torrance, California USA – Turner Motorsport drivers stood atop the podium in both Grand Sport and Street Touring classes after the Grand-Am Cup race at Miller Motorsport Park on Saturday, September 2, following 200 miles of uninterrupted green-flag racing.

Grand Sport Class

The overall win was claimed by Anders Hainer and Boris Said in the No. 97 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW M3. Hainer qualified on the front row and led the race when it was time to pit. Said took over the car on lap 24, and when all the front-runners had made their stops for driver changes, the No. 97 car was back out in front. What followed was a classic battle with Wolf Henzler in the No. 175 Rembrandt Charms Porsche GT3.

After giving chase for eight laps of the 4.486-mile, 24-turn course, Henzler got past. The duo stayed nose-to-tail until two laps from the end, when the Porsche suffered a mechanical failure and slowed. Said attacked, passing the Porsche on the last lap to take the checkered flag.

This win was the first of the season for the No. 97 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport M3 and moved co-driver Anders Hainer from fourth to first overall in the championship standings. With 228 points, Hainer enjoys a seven-point lead over Brent Martini and Pat Long, drivers of the No. 81 Wheel Enhancement/Synergy Racing Porsche 997, heading into the last race. Boris Said has missed two Grand-Am Cup weekends due to overlapping Nextel Cup commitments, and stands sixth, with 176 points.

Chris Gleason started the No. 96 H&R Springs/StopTech Brakes/Turner Motorsport BMW M3 twelfth on the grid, and Bill Auberlen took over to finish ninth. The duo has had a strong season, with six top-ten finishes, five podiums and back-to-back wins at Lime Rock and Mid-Ohio. Bad luck has afflicted them at several events, though, and they sit fourth in the driver’s championship, with 199 points each, still mathematically within reach of the championship.

Turner Motorsport was not the only StopTech-equipped team to do well. Tommy Constantine and Mike Borkowski, driving the No. 35 Playboy Racing Nissan 350Z, finished third in Grand Sport, complementing the No. 33 sister car’s earlier win at Virginia International Raceway.

Street Touring Class

In the Street Touring class, Will Turner started the No. 95 H&R Springs/Borla Exhaust BMW 330i from the pole and led 15 laps. As in Grand Sport, when all the green-flag pit stops were completed, Turner Motorsport driver Don Salama was in the lead. The last 18 laps were a battle with Silvain Tremblay in the No. 70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8, the BMW sedan crossing the line less than half a second ahead of the Mazda.

Don Salama, No. 95 H&R Springs/Borla Exhaust BMW 330i:
“Will made the call not to change tires during our pit stop and it was that decision that ultimately won us the race. This track did not agree with new tires. We found that out in testing - scuffed tires were the way to go. The No. 70 car changed all four tires in the pit stop."

The win was the first for Will Turner in 29 Grand-Am Cup starts. "It's just an incredible feeling," Turner said. "It's a great, great day for racing. There were no yellows in two-and-a-half hours and great racing. It's the way it should be on a race track. This is kind of surreal. It hasn't hit me yet. We've been second so many times. I was looking to see if a storm was coming in or something else was going to happen. I guess it will settle in later tonight."

With eight top-five finishes and three podiums in nine races so far this season, Turner and Salama held the series point lead going into the Miller Motorsports Park weekend. The win stretched that to 11 points, with 253 versus the 242 held by Hugh and Matt Plumb, drivers of the No. 27 Bill Fenton Motorsports Acura RSX-S.

The SPEED Channel will begin broadcasts of the Miller Motorsports Park race on September 23 at 1:00pm ET. The season’s final result will be decided in a pair of six-hour endurance races at Virginia International Raceway on October 8, with GS and ST classes running separately.
