Team StopTech Scores Again at World Challenge Race at Mid-Ohio Presented by StopTech
by Frank A. Filipponio | Aug 09, 2013

Team StopTech keeps charging through this racing season, with another great result at Mid-Ohio last weekend during the Honda Indy 200 presented by StopTech. In scoring his 10th podium finish in 12 races, Jack Baldwin still holds the points lead with two races to go in the 2013 Pirelli World Challenge GTS Championship. Defending TC champion Michael Cooper, meanwhile, won his third and fourth races in a row, moving into fifth in the championship.

Jack Baldwin’s #73 Motul/StopTech/Foametix Porsche Cayman S was carrying a 100 lb. “win-weight” penalty at Mid-Ohio, so Baldwin and the entire GTSport team were a little concerned about its impact after qualifying sixth for Saturday’s race.

"I was able to get up behind Lawson's Camaro and run with him the entire race to finish fourth,” explained Baldwin. “The car was great, but with the 100 lb. increase as a driver, it was one of the toughest races of the year.”

Qualifying fourth for Sunday's race, Baldwin got another great standing start and quickly moved into second behind Lawson Aschenbach's Camaro, but was not able to hold off the faster straightaway speeds of Wilkin's Kia or Cunningham's Acura falling back to fourth at the halfway point. As the race from second to fifth was raging in a nose-to-tail battle, Baldwin executed an inside pass on the Kia in the famed Keyhole Turn with two laps to go earning him his tenth podium finish of the season.

"WOW! What a race," exclaimed Baldwin. "I'm good in the turns, but they are killing me down the straights. They can pass me much easier than I can pass them, so I'm giving it everything I've got to get the job done."

Meanwhile in TC competition, defending champion Michael Cooper had another terrific weekend scoring a pair of wins in his StopTech-equipped Mazdaspeed3 – making that four wins in a row for the season. Close behind in both races was Tristan Herbert in his StopTech BBK-wearing VW Jetta GLI, who gathered points with second and third place finishes.

The next round for Pirelli World Challenge GT and GTS will be Round 13 at Sonoma on August 25, while the TC and TCB classes have another double-header planned.

The races from Mid-Ohio will be broadcast August 18 at 2 p.m. (EDT) on NBC Sports Network.
