Team StopTech’s Jack Baldwin Takes Sonoma Win for Kelsey

SONOMA, Calif. – Along with the whole GTSport Racing, Goldcrest Motorsports team, Jack Baldwin’s trip to Sonoma went pretty well, despite a magnitude 6.0 earthquake that rattled the area over the weekend.  With the now-familiar #Racing4Kelsey stickers prominently displayed on his car, Jack nabbed the pole for round 13 of the Pirelli World Challenge GTS championship, and stayed up front during the race on Saturday to take the win in the Cadillac Grand Prix of Sonoma, part of the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma weekend.

Baldwin led flag-to-flag in the No. 73 RESET-MD/StopTech Porsche Cayman S for his second win of the season, the first coming in Round 4 at Barber. It was a close battle with Lawson Aschenbach, but Baldwin was able to stay ahead to the checkers, setting the fastest race lap in the process.

The win was an emotional one for Baldwin, who along with winning in front of his family and the rest of the GTSport Racing team, is also Racing4Kelsey. The team is running this season for Kelsey Flanigan, a 23-year-old battling brain cancer. Flanigan and her family were also in attendance this weekend.

“The last two years here have been pretty rough, and this year in particular has been pretty tough, but we never gave up despite the wrecks, gearboxes and everything else,” Baldwin said. “For me, I wanted to seal the deal for these guys who have worked so hard all year. My wife’s here, daughters are here we raced for Kelsey today. So to do this at Sonoma, we got our monkey off our back and we might be back in the game here points-wise. You just never know.”

Baldwin followed up the Saturday win with a hard-fought 2nd place finish on Sunday, charging back through the field after a great start was interrupted by incidents in front of him in the GT and GT-A classes. Once again Jack scored the fastest lap on his way to his second podium in two days and sixth of the season.

While Baldwin fell back taking evasive action behind stalled cars on the grid, the pair of Chevrolet Camaros of Andy Lee and Lawson Aschenbach moved into first and second. Lee’s start was particularly impressive, as he gained nine spots off the line in the No. 20 BestIT/Crown Seven Chevrolet Camaro to secure the Optima Batteries Best Standing Start award. Lee eventually ended up in 3rd, scoring his third podium of the year.
