StopTech Helps Millen to New World Record at Pikes Peak

StopTech Helps Rhys Millen to New World Record at the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

(Industry, Calif. – August 13, 2012)
– Veteran racer Rhys Millen and team RMR set a new world record with a time of 9:46.164 at the 90th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs, Colorado this past weekend. StopTech Racing supplied the brakes for the winning 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, a Time Attack Class car that shattered the overall record set last year by six-time overall race winner Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima. In 2011, Monster was the first person to finally break the ten minute mark driving his highly modified Suzuki in the open class, while Rhys finished second in his own open class RMR special.

For 2012, Rhys entered the Time Attack Class in a 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe that was wearing a StopTech Trophy BBK. It was a somewhat familiar sight for Team StopTech, as Rhys’ father Rod drove a 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe to a record-setting class victory last year, also using StopTech brakes.

This year’s course was completely paved for the first time ever, which led to pre-race speculation that times would tumble. Snow and freezing temperatures kept many competitors from taking full advantage of the tarmac however. Although Millen’s record-breaking time was set on the full course, bad weather forced race officials to officially shorten the course for only the third time since 1916. Still, many drivers and riders were able to fully complete the full 12.42-mile, 156-turn course.

"With the newly paved section of the course and the hot weather conditions, a lot of people failed or crashed. Our cars balance remained the same from practice to race day using these Hankook F200 Tires this entire run. Even on a slick tire and torrential downpour in the last mile and a half, with the heat we were able to achieve in the tires the grip was still adequate and we were able to produce a new world record,” said Rhys Millen.

2010 Le Mans Champion Romain Dumas and his Porsche 997 GT3R were Millen’s closest competition this year, with factory Porsche driver Dumas completing the course in 9:46.181 – just 17/1000 behind Rhys. This marks a back to back victory over Porsche factory supported drivers for the RMR Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

While the quick times may have surprised some, Rhys had fully expected to best the ten-minute mark. "Me and my dad went over numbers yesterday and we added up all of our sectors and came up with a 9:21," he said after setting the new record. "With the sections that you don't get to practice, we added 20 seconds which was a 9:41. The buffer of just knowing that things usually run hard on race day, I said 9:45."
